Private Clients

Cardno Emerging Markets (Australia), along with the other international development businesses in Cardno which form Cardno's Emerging Markets Division, provides clients with global reach and round the clock service. We assist companies align business imperatives with community expectations to lower risks and bring a project to realisation more quickly. With over 30 years experience operating on the ground, we facilitate productive engagement between industry, governments and communities. Our services include:

Community engagement

Projects interact with local communities. Strong community engagement ensures a ‘social licence’ to operate is maintained. We offer services in community consultations, design, implementation and evaluation of community relations plans and communication strategies.

Local content

Local content refers to the percentage of local employees or contractors to a project. Some countries specify minimum quotas for local participation in projects. In other countries, local content is still desirable in order to obtain political and social support for a project. We analyse options for local content, recommend realistic targets and propose strategies for securing and retaining local content.

Education, training and employment

While locally sourced labour can reduce operating risks and costs, often people are not work ready or appropriately skilled. We work with clients to design education and training pathways to meet critical workforce needs using locally sourced labour.

Supply chains

Using tools such as value chain frameworks, we assist clients to address constraints that are restricting efficiency. Factors affecting local participation in value chains can range from the business regulatory environment and procurement processes to access to finance and markets. We deepen linkages between large firms and small or medium-sized local firms to build successful value chains.

Alternative livelihoods

Large projects often involve a peak employment period, for example a construction boom. This temporary employment can lead to social dislocation and problems for the project post-peak in places where the labour market is fragmented. Initiatives to assist local staff in the transition to sustainable income generation can include micro-credit, business development and vocational training.

Human rights

Companies are under increasing pressure to demonstrate protection of human rights in order to manage risk and have a positive local impact. We provide services in human rights risk assessments, policy and strategy development, community engagement and reporting and communications.

Conflict analysis

Projects are sometimes located in areas of high volatility or enduring conflict. Drawing on our expertise at Cardno Emerging Markets (UK), we offer services in conflict analysis, risk assessment and conflict sensitive approaches to minimise opportunities for costly project disruptions.

Workforce health

A healthy and productive workforce is vital for a project’s success. Important health workplace programs in developing countries can include HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, reproductive health and family planning. We work with governments and businesses to find cost effective ways for employees and their dependents to access health services.

Compliance and reporting

Sustainability initiatives are often in response to legislation, regulations, policies or standards. We undertake compliance assessments and gap analyses to advise clients on the implications of compliance, including reporting requirements and costs.

Stakeholder relations

Stakeholders with an interest in a project can include employees, shareholders, communities, customers, contractors, media, government, NGOs, special interest groups and other businesses and associations. We offer services in managing stakeholder relations through stakeholder identification, analysis and communication strategies.

Evaluation of impacts

Accountability to shareholders and other stakeholders means that social investments must demonstrate tangible results. Drawing on experience in managing development projects around the world, we have developed tools for evaluating impacts and contribution to organisational goals.

Our clients include companies in the resources sector, such as British Gas Tunisia, Shell Uganda and infrastructure project development and contracting companies such as PT Leighton Contractors Indonesia, amongst others.
